Bayer Leverkusen Midfielder Victor Boniface Nearing Return
Alonso Confirms March Target for Nigerian Striker
Bundesliga Champions Look to Bolster Attack
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has provided an update on the fitness of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface, indicating that he is close to returning to action and could be available for selection in March.
Boniface has been sidelined since September 2023 with a knee injury sustained in training. His absence has been a significant blow to Leverkusen's attacking options, with the team struggling for goals in recent weeks.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Alonso said: "Victor is making good progress in his recovery. He has been working hard in rehabilitation and is now nearing a return to full training. We are hopeful that he will be back with the team in March."
Boniface's return will be a major boost for Leverkusen, who are currently top of the Bundesliga standings. The Nigerian has scored six goals in 12 appearances for the club this season and will be expected to play a key role in their title challenge.
Leverkusen's next match is against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, and Alonso confirmed that Boniface will not be available for this game. However, he expressed optimism that the striker will be ready for the following fixture against Borussia Dortmund on March 5.
